What Is Cellulite?

Many people wonder, just what is cellulite, and what can be done about it?

Innocuous as it sounds, cellulite is simply fat tissues, held in pockets connected with tissue. Under ideal circumstances, these pockets of fat lie in a smooth layer just beneath the epidural, or outside, skin layer, and the muscle found closer to bones. Trouble occurs when these fat storage areas expand. Fats combine with fluids and toxins. If these are not properly flushed out, the connective tissues allow bulging, hardening and thickening. This is what is cellulite; the lumpy, cottage cheese appearance of skin beneath the surface.

Some research indicates that there are actually two kinds of cellulite: hard and soft. Hard cellulite affects tissues closer to the large muscles, mainly in women who are quite fit. Athletes and dancers can suffer this type of cellulite. The other kind is soft cellulite. It lies closer to the skin surface. Because the soft type is closer to the surface, it is easier to get rid of than the hard type, which is attached to muscle.

Would You Give 22 minutes a Day to Get Rid of Your Cellulite?

Cellulite has been associated with certain health issues and may be a warning sign of unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise and increased risk of high blood pressure. Because of where it is concentrated, cellulite will affect a woman’s choice of clothing. A sufferer will be reluctant to wear short skirts or shorts if the problem is on the hips and thighs; if the buttocks are affected, she will not wear a bikini. Cellulite problems around the neck will limit the type of shirt a man will choose to wear, as will cellulite buildup on the arms.

What is cellulite caused by? Sometimes the cause is beyond one’s control. An injury, hormonal imbalance, childbirth and pregnancy, birth control pills all may contribute to cellulite at various stages of life. This is only one reason that women are more susceptible. Women store fat differently on their bodies. Fats are concentrated around the middle – hips, thighs, abdomen, belly. The cellulite on a woman’s body is stored in a different pattern also, making even small amounts look more pronounced than on a man’s body.

What is cellulite treatment like, you may wonder. Changing the diet to encourage the natural improvement of circulation is a good place to start. Focus on fresh fruits and vegetables, as these contain enzymes, water and trace minerals that may promote healthy removal of chemical toxins from the cellulite cells, along with stored fat. High-fiber whole grains will also promote natural removal of waste products stored in the body’s cells. Make sure you drink lots of water, avoid sugary drinks, and cut back on caffeine from black tea. Herbal teas, especially green tea, help during the detoxification process.
